CROMARTY MEDIEVAL BURGH COMMUNITY ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT 2014!

After a long, cold winter and spring, summer has truly arrived in Cromarty and the community dig plans are in full swing (See photo below taken this morning - the Cromarty dig site is in the distant centre of the image next to the shore. You can't find a more beautiful excavation location and we can't wait to get going!!)

SCHOOL SESSIONS

We start off with three days of training sessions with Cromarty Primary School next week, where P6-P7 will get the chance to learn archaeological excavation techniques and gain some familiarity with artefact identification. P1-P2 and P3-P5 will have 2 separate sessions on the site where P6-P7 were digging as well as some classroom training.  Although we're still trying to forge links with the academy, we will also pay a visit to Cromarty Youth Cafe next week to talk about the project. The Cromarty Medieval Burgh team is looking forward to working with our amazing young people!

21-22 / 28-29 JUNE 2014: FREE TRAINING

Following straight on from the school sessions, we are leading two FREE weekend training events on the dig site. While exploring areas identified on last year's geophysical survey, experienced archaeologists will provide training on proper excavation techniques along with training on site recording and a chance to learn more about identifying artefacts. Both weekend events take place on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 4:00 in Reeds Park, Cromarty. Please get in touch (info@medievalcromarty.org or 01381 600726) if you want to come along on 21, 22, 28 or 29 June!  We hope that this fantastic opportunity will give individuals more confidence to volunteers on during the upcoming 3-week field season.

12 JULY - 3 AUGUST 2014: OPEN AREA COMMUNITY EXCAVATION

Come out and join the project team and volunteers in Reeds Park, Cromarty for a chance to delve into the well-preserved Medieval layers on this greenfield, shoreline site! Plans for the summer season include a tailored list of activities for youth, hands-on training on excavation, recording and artefact identification and FREE specialist training sessions open to all! We will also be conducting daily site tours and an end-of-dig BBQ! Please get in touch (info@medievalcromarty.org or 01381 600726) if you are interested in volunteering!

Sue & I would be interested in participating in the dig and the training sessions either or both weekends. Will the training be different each weekend?

The training will be different really only in location of trenches...the more days you are there, the better chance you'll have to rotate between tasks... Look forward to seeing you!
